HUE Mt Eden – Salon review

I’ve decided to try to get my dyed red hair back to a more natural (ish!) state of blonde, so I took a trip to my local HUE salon. If you haven’t heard of HUE salons, they’re a group of hair salons across Auckland that only do colour – no cuts, no styling, no drying even – just hair colour.

I originally had my hair dyed ginger at HUE Ponsonby from my usual very blonde hair and they did a great job (you can read about it and see pics in my Ginger Hair post over on Pampered & Polished UK), so I was keen to give HUE another try.

I booked my appointment at HUE Mt Eden online over on their website – a very simple, pain-free exercise and they text you the day before to remind you of your appointment.

One of the reasons that I like going to HUE is that I don’t feel pressured into getting my hair cut, because they simply don’t do it! Another benefit is the price, HUE isn’t particularly cheap, but because you’re not getting a cut or style it’s much cheaper than other salons if you’re happy to go without a cut. So a fab option if you’ve got long hair like me and don’t need too many hair cuts, but find your roots have a nasty habit of showing all-too-quickly!

I had a half head of highlights and a toner and it cost $105 – one thing I would say, if you’re on a budget make sure your stylist tells you at the start of your appointment how much each part will cost. I didn’t know my stylist was going to use a toner, so was expecting to just pay the price for a half head.

My HUE stylist set my expectations around what would be possible really well for my colour before she started, she explained that because my hair was so bleached under my ginger dye-job, it would take a few trips to the salon to go from ginger to blonde again to make sure the hair didn’t just break off.

The HUE stylist did a good job of my highlights, you can see in the pic above, they’re not too stripey and it does look very natural, but it’s nowhere near blonde enough for me yet!

I mentioned that HUE Salons don’t cut, dry or style your hair – above is a picture of one of the hair drying stations at HUE Mt Eden – every product you could ever need to use and all the tools to dry and style your hair.

I have booked myself in at HUE Mt Eden for another colour in a few weeks time, so I’ll make sure to post an update afterwards!
