This week’s nail art – How-to… Black and Neon manicure

This week I’ve attempted a manicure inspired by a pic I found over on Pinterest and I am very happy with the results, if I do say so myself! ;)

Here is my black and neon manicure… and a how-to of the steps I took to create it.

Step 1: Choose 5 different neon (or the brightest you have) polishes and paint each of your nails with one of the colours.

Step 1 - paint each nail a different neon nail polish colour

Step 1 - paint each nail a different neon nail polish colour

The neon/ bright nail polish colours I have used are:

  • Thumb – Models Own Feeling Blue nail polish
  • Pointer finger – Models Own Purple Poppy nail polish (maybe not quite bright enough for this…)
  • Middle finger – Models Own Neon Orange nail polish
  • Ring finger – Essie Pink Parka nail polish
  • Little finger – Miki neon green nail polish

Wait for these polishes to dry really, really well (don’t be impatient!)

Step 2: Use polythene tape to mark out where you want your neon stripes to go…

Step 2 - stick on tape in the pattern of neon stripes

Step 2 - stick on tape in the pattern of neon stripes

Remember, the end result will be the reverse of how your nails look now. Next… and this is very, very important – make sure the tape is fully stuck onto your nail along the full length of the tape, otherwise your black top coat will seep under the tape and you won’t get perfect lines.

Step 3: Paint a black nail polish over the top of each nail, making sure to fully cover the nail and the tape. Now wait until you’re absolutely sure the black nail polish is dry. In fact wait until it’s dry and then wait 30 minutes more, just to be sure!

I used Nox Twilight Black Tie black nail polish

Step 4: Veeeery, veeery carefully peel off the strips of tape.

Step 5: Finish your black and neon manicure by painting on a high-gloss topcoat to seal in the colours.

The picture that originally inspired me had much thinner lines for the stripes, which looks lovely, so I will be trying that next time!
